Recorded dictation itself was established as "a time saver over
handwriting and stenography among attorneys, physicians and other
professionals" way back in 1952. In fact, it was in
1973 that the first mini-cassette recorder was
marketed. (For a brief and interesting history of
dictation according to Dictaphone, one of the five oldest surviving US
brands, click

DIGITAL DICTATION
While many attorneys and firms
still use analog (tape) based dictation, the benefits of digital are
so overwhelming, it is only a matter of time before tapes go the way of the typewriter (still hanging around the
office, but rarely used).
While many are interested in this new
technology, attorneys and large firms are loathe to add another
technology upgrade and many feel that since their dictation process "ain't
broke, don't fix it". Most common response I've received to date
to my query: "You know, you can save money by just by upgrading to
digital dictation?" - "We don't like change". The problem is,
upgrading to digital the right way causes almost no change in how these
firm directors and dictators actually produce, except one: instead
of walking the tape out to a secretary's chair, a button or two is
pressed on their computer or phone - next file.

Consider this:
Using analog dictation is the technological equivalent of
listening to music on an 8 track! |
Digital dictation is:
- Convenient
- there are no tapes. This one bears repeating:
there are no tapes! This means that you do not need to
be in the same location as your transcriptionist or secretary
to hand off a tape. That means you can work remotely as
your schedule allows or demands! Additionally, there's
no equipment to tote around or software to install. In
fact, you can work from anywhere there is a phone! Simply pick
up any standard phone, dial a toll free number, enter your
unique User ID and begin recording your dictation directly
into our secure server.
- Cost effective
- no equipment to purchase or software licenses to buy.
Additionally, outsourcing initial drafts transcription allows for increased productivity of in-house
support staff;
-
Simple
- use any standard telephone and a toll free number to
provide dictation directly into our secure server.
Whether you're a firm of one or 100, there's no equipment to
purchase, software to install or even new skill to learn.
What if you've never dictated? Simply write out your
work, call the toll free number and read your own handwriting
right into your speakerphone.
